More than 26 years later, I’m still doing exactly that: learning, building and trying to make things better.
The designer never really went away.
Even when I’m working deep inside development, I notice the typography, the spacing, the information hierarchy and whether an interaction feels awkward.
I notice when a site is technically functional but still doesn’t feel right. That design background has become one of my biggest advantages as a developer.
And the developer changed how I design.
Understanding what happens underneath an interface changes the decisions you make above it. I think about performance, maintainability, content architecture, accessibility and what happens when someone needs to change the site six months from now.

If I take responsibility for something, I care about what happens to it.

Whether designing, coding or explaining a technical issue, I want things to make sense.
